Real life

By Editor in Chief on November 15th, 2007

I’m walking around with a sad story in my back pocket.

I clipped it from The Detroit News and I want everyone to read it. But I don’t want to be the meanest old man for spreading it. If you ask, I’ll pull it from the pocket and unfold it, but you’ll have to grab it from my hand so I can stay guilt free for spreading it.

Not for tearful, a pet shop fire story by Steve Pardo in The Detroit News.

To rebound, try this home video of a youngster on harmonica.

Get that car fixed

By Web Editor on October 25th, 2007

It appears that, yet again, I have invoked the wrath of the automobile gods.

Let me give you a brief history of my car woes:

November 2006 — power steering out. Forked over $400, problem solved.

January 2007 — power steering out again. Forked over $400, problem solved.

August 2007 — transmission dead. A painful $3800 later, problem solved.

And this week, the automobile gods smote me again. After a trip to Chipotle in Ann Arbor, my engine overheated.

As time wears on, my finances stretch thin, my patience shrinks, and the problems mount. Currently, my most obvious options are limited: get it fixed or get a new car.

On the other hand, my less obvious options are many. For instance, I could sacrifice some unsuspecting victim to the automobile gods in a desperate plea to appease them (while hoping for a miracle). While results are not guaranteed, it could be worth a shot.

All of this poses the question: where is the most reliable (and affordable) place in town to repair your car when you’ve invoked the anger of the automobile gods?

Perhaps The Collegian should investigate. In the meantime, maybe I’ll invest in a horse.

It might be better for the environment, my sanity and my wallet.

New film on fonts

By Focus Editor on October 24th, 2007

This past summer a new movie released in a handful of cities across the globe. It explored an extremely powerful element of pop culture that often goes unnoticed. Fonts. Not just any font though, this documentary looked at Helvetica, the ‘perfect’ font.

Take a look at almost any street sign, the logo of American Airlines, American Apparel, the advertisments on busses and other signage around. The font exists across the commercial world, it has its fans, but garners enemies as well.

Some of the most notable names in the world of graphic design contribute to the film. Artists like Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, Massimo Vignelli, Wim Crouwel and Hermann Zapf express their differing opinions during the course of the film, some praising the font for it’s practicality, others cursing it for supplying an extra tool to capitalism and conformity.

I was lucky enough to see the film during its run in Chicago at the Gene Siskel Film Center. The experience surpassed my expectations. I arrived, listened to fellow font nerds complain about Comic Sans, participated in a Q&A with the director and mingled with other font fans who’d traveled from around the region.

Two weeks ago I pre-ordered the DVD. The film is released in two weeks. Perhaps more exciting than viewing it with an enormous pail of popcorn with fake butter will be the pin with “I Love Helvetica” I’ll be receiving.

View the trailers for the film here.

Woe is The Collegian editor who enters the office Wednesday night wearing a sweater which mangles the image of an owl so as to look like Yoda.

Local nightlife revived

By Features Editor on October 24th, 2007

Get excited! Hillsdale might actually have a decent bar scene again soon.

After a couple pretty dry years, new bars are starting to sprout up. Jonesville’s new Los Mariachi’s just got its liquor license, and Time Out Sports and Spirits is hoping to open downtown by the beginning of the year. And local bar owners think good business will draw even more venues and entertainment to the area.

We, as college students, though, have to support this growth if we want it to continue. So, once in a while, whether its for Rosalie’s Long Island Ice Teas or Los Mariachi’s margaritas, let’s break out of our frat party shells and take big groups out for drinks at one of the local watering holes.
